A.C. Whyte & Co scoop the charity prize at summer final
The summer season of Business Fives National Finals was won by AC Whyte & Co.
The team from the Barrhead builders – champions in the Glasgow Construction, Housing and Property heat – sealed a hard-won victory against Hudson, who won the equivalent heat in Edinburgh.
It sealed a glorious tournament for AC Whyte & Co – Business Fives winter season finalists – who maintained a 100 per cent record through the whole tournament.
Tournament top scorer Mate Lacsi was on target again as the external wall insulation specialists ran out 3-0 winners.
It was Hudson goalkeeper Greg McDermott, who was man of the match – who kept his side in the game.
In the semi-finals the two teams battled past chartered accountants Geoghegans and Standard Life. Standard Life were unlucky to lose 2-1 to AC Whyte & Co after overcoming Sir Robert McAlpine on penalties in the quarters.
Geoghegans’ 4-1 defeat to Hudson was their first defeat of the summer season, after they had put paid to Professional Services champs Anderson Strathern in the quarters.
Among the other teams to do well at the finals, hosted by Powerleague in Edinburgh, were Scottish Water and Turner & Townsend who walked away with a respectable quarter final showing.
Off the pitch, victory for AC Whyte & Co sealed them a winners’ prize of £3,120 for their chosen charity Glasgow Children’s Hospital. The team had themselves committed to making a £1,000 donation to the hospital as part of Business Fives’ commitment to charity throughout the summer season.
As revealed by Insider earlier in the week, the tournament had set a target of £10,000 in donations to charity – but generous teams had in fact managed to raise nearly double that amount.
This year’s finals finished off with a Q&A session, hosted by Sky TV presenter David Tanner and involving Business Fives’ ambassadors – Scotland hall of famed Rhonda Jones, Hibs icon Pat Stanton, Aberdeen and St Mirren star Lee Mair and former Partick Thistle and Celtic goal scorer Jim Melrose.
Business Fives founder, John McClarey said “We’re blown away by the efforts of all the companies involved in our summer season and we’re absolutely delighted to be on course to double our initial £10,000 charity target. CSR is hugely important to us as our company has a commitment to donating 10% of all proceeds to charity. We’re looking forward to finding our who will win this donation at the final on Thursday where the overall winners of the Summer season will win £3,120 for their chosen charity.”
